Domain name extensions are the last part of a domain name. For example, in ‘4irjourney.com,’ the
domain name extension is .com. You’ll also see domain name extensions referred to as top-level
domains (TLDs). Here are some examples of domain name extensions:

.com – This is by far the most popular and commonly used TLD.
It was initially created for commercial organizations, but there are no restrictions on who can
utilize this extension.
.org – This extension was first created to be used by nonprofits.
However, this is no longer enforced and is a common TLD for education-based websites, schools,
and more.
.co.za – Each country has its own country code top level domain (ccTLD) that helps to identify that site as being
from a specific country. This domain extension is reserved for domain registered in South Africa.
There are various other domain name extensions, which we have not covered above such as .org.za,
.co, .africa, .durban, .tech, .net and many more. Its good practice nowadays to associate your
domain with a domain extension relevant to your industry, i.e. .accounting or .tech. This helps with
search engine optimization.
